FAIRBANKS - Senior shooters took home gold, silver and bronze from the rifle and pistol shooting events of the 2008
Alaska International Senior Games (AISG) while local firearms instructor and AIM-COMM vice-president Joe Nava beat out all the competition to take first overall in both events. With just a one-point difference between the two, lady shooter Dody Maki almost edged Nava out for first overall in the pistol shooting event; Maki fired a 188 while Nava scored 189 out of a possible 200 points. Nava scored a perfect 200 out of 200 in the rifle shooting event.
After the shooting events concluded Nava, the oldest shooter competing, remarked that winning the pistol shoot "suprised the [heck] out of me." Nava also took a gold medal in the trap shooting event during the senior games.
Twelve shooters competed, ranging in age from 50 to 77 with awards issued based on age brackets: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 75-79. In the pistol shooting event first place overall (top scores all age brackets) went to Joe Nava, second place went to Dody Maki and third place was a tie between Paul Maki and Beth Nava-Allard, who both fired a score of 185. In the rifle shooting event first place overall went to Joe Nava, second place went to Beth Nava-Allard (192) and third place went to Cam Carlson (189). Carlson fired the rifle shooting event with a borrowed gun that she had never used before and soon after the buzzer sounded to commence firing she was sending bullets downrange to smack right into the 10 ring of a number of the score bulls on her A-32, 50-foot rifle target.
The rifle and pistol shooting events were hosted by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range. Range project director John Wyman served as the event coordinator and chief range safety officer and called the shoot while event commissioner Rick Briggs helped shooters with everything from event registration to running the timer during the shoots to compiling scores and handing out medals. The event was held Wednesday, August 13, 2008 and is the second year of the rifle and pistol shooting events for the AISG.
