AIM-COMM's Shooting Leagues

Alaska's most popular Bullseye Pistol league shooting program!

ABOUT AIM-COMM'S SHOOTING LEAGUES...

League n. Sports an association of teams or clubs that compete chiefly among themselves. Leagues.

Participating in an organized shooting league is an excellent way to improve your shooting ability. Leagues offer regular practice in a structured, friendly, and competitive environment. The shooting leagues hosted at the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range (HEDR) are designed for shooters of all skill levels, from beginner to expert, ages 10 and older! AIM-COMM's league shooting program is Alaska's most popular bullseye pistol shooting program and is likely the world's farthest north program of its kind! When it is 40 below zero (degrees F) out in the middle of a Fairbanks' winter, AIM-COMM league shooters can often be found at the indoor range practicing their shooting skills.

HISTORY...

League shooting began at the range in the fall of 2000, in an effort to offer community members a safe and structured, yet fun, social shooting event. ADF&G sponsored and hosted the league and worked to organize shooters who could administer league business. Partly from that effort, AIM-COMM, the Alaska Interior Marksmanship Committee, was born. AIM-COMM today is a strong and growing group of shooters dedicated to promoting safe firearms handling and shooting. The leagues are a program of the Competitive Shooting Division of AIM-COMM. AIM-COMM league participants include state pistol champions and national record holder shooters as well as grandmas and grandchildren who enjoy target shooting and the social aspects of the league program.

JOIN A LEAGUE!...

If league shooting sounds like something you might be interested in, check out the information on this site about AIM-COMM's shooting leagues. You can also stop by the range and we can answer your questions and introduce you to current league shooters.

AIM-COMM's shooting leagues are administered primarily by the AIM-COMM League Council in partnership with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range (HEDR). The League Council conducts most of the business of the league and performs much of the behind the scenes work to make the leagues safe, successful, and fun for all. The League Council members are all volunteers. The ADF&G range project director serves as an advisor on the council.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Volunteer officers and organizers of AIM-COMM's bullseye pistol shooting league program met Thursday evening at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range and made the decision to add a .22 rim-fire pistol league to Friday nights this winter, from late January through March 16. The .22 league will run concurrently with the already scheduled center-fire pistol winter league that will be conducted during the same dates - on Wednesday evenings. The center-fire league was consolidated to one evening (Wednesdays) which allows for conducting a .22 league on Friday evenings at the range.

Online registration at www.aimcomm.org is now open for the newly added .22 pistol league. There is room for 20 regular shooters and five alternate shooters on the .22 league. The cost is $150 for regular shooters and $50 for alternates. There is also a $20 annual AIM-COMM activity fee and a $10 league fee for those who have not yet paid these fees for the 2011-2012 AIM-COMM league season (Sep-May).

A Word from the Most Improved Shooter .22 League XV

joycebatemanI think maybe the first criteria for attaining the coveted Most Improved Shooter award is to start out with a score in the basement like mine was. The next step is to care about improving that low score. Of course, I neglected this second step and apathetically made my way through match after match, not really noticing how much my scores were improving. So, needless to say, I was shocked to receive the MIS award in the .22 league. I tend to be one of the casual shooters who joined the league to have fun and let the scores take a back seat to being involved with a really great group of people. I always get a lot of encouragement from other shooters, both from ones who have scores like mine and those who always see their names at the top, approaching ever closer to the elusive 900.

Most league shooters are more intent on their scores than I am. Then again, some shooters are really relaxed about scores, like me. The great thing about these leagues is that there are shooters of both types. No matter the skill level or intensity of the shooters, one thing is a constant--everyone encourages each other. In the end, that’s the most important aspect of this game called bull’s eye pistol shooting. So, come on, join a league! You’ll be glad you did.

Joyce Bateman

Editor's Note:
Joyce Bateman was a regular shooter at the Alaska Department of Fish & Game Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range in Fairbanks, Alaska, for many years until she moved to Montana in 2011. Bateman's enthusiam and great attitude were always noticeable and her shooting improved tremendously since she began shooting. Bateman volunteered as the recording secretary for the AIM-COMM board of directors and also as the league council secretary and was always offering to help with other events and programs at the range. Bateman was nominated for range volunteer of the year (VOTY) for 2011. Thank you, Joyce, for all your contributions!
